2008 is expected to be  a great vintage in Bairrada for sparkling, whites and reds Baga ( with crop reduction for sparkling) and Touriga Nacional (with small production this year - no sparkling made)  based.

The weather was wet during the winter with some frost in January and rainy days during the Spring. Rain again during the flowering that reduced a lot not only the Touriga Nacional but also the white grapes that this year suffered frost at their first stage, mainly Maria Gomes.

The Summer was not too hot and the ripening period was long. Curiously we were expecting a difficult time to get the full polyphenolic ripeness but the vines, specially from Baga -that had a normal production - not affected by the rain at the flowering. Of course, if my Baga is outstanding (as we believe) was because we did a first harvest for sparkling rosé production at August's last week - in some cases  60% but in general 50%) leaving the other bunches to pick at September last week - achieving a polyphenolic superb maturation as for Vinha Pan and Vinhas Velhas range. I imagine that 2008 Pé Franco and Vinha Barrosa will be, as say the Bordeaux people the Century's vintage.

News at 2008 vintage to be released before September (it will be in August) 2009- A sparkling slightly rosé from Single vineyard VINHA FORMAL that is my come back (just for two products) to Bairrada denomination, made with 50% Bical and 50% Touriga Nacional grapes, fermented in the casks used for the Vinha Formal 2007 white fermentation for 4 weeks and bottled for the second fermentation on SEPTEMBER 30th 2008- the grapes were picked on August 26th.

A single vineyard Vinha FORMAL RED with 100% Touriga Nacional (just two casks) and the coming back of Vinha Barrio (two casks) and Quinta do Moinho (two casks). As in 2007 Vintage  we did in partnership with Filipa the Molecular white wine FLP (or LP  for the Brasilian market) with Bical, Cerceal and Sercialinho Grapes and as experience to check the winemaking a Low alcohol Sweet Red wine with Baga, that will be our Red Molecular Wine.

Best regards Luis Pato
